Why a Support Grid is Important

In vessels such as mash tuns, lauter tuns or media beds, a support grid (false bottom) ensures that the granules or media remain supported while the liquid flows through uniformly. Without a reliably engineered support grid, you risk media migration, channeling, uneven flow and reduced performance of the vessel.

Design & Functionality

Support grid is typically fabricated using V‑shaped (wedge) profile wires welded to support rods or bars, creating continuous slots that allow liquid to pass but hold back the media.

In lauter tun applications: the screen sits on a ledge inside the tank and supports the grain bed while the wort is drained through the false bottom.

The grid must handle both static loads (media weight) and dynamic loads (flow pressure, cleaning cycles) while maintaining flatness and slot accuracy.

Key Features & Benefits

Precision slot openings ensure media is retained and flow stays even across the area.

High open area due to wedge wire profile allows high flow rates with low resistance.

Rigid construction resists deformation or buckling under heavy load.

Uniform flow distribution prevents dead zones and improves process efficiency.

Easy to clean or retrofit, since the grid can be designed in modular sections.

Support Grid Specifications & Materials

Materials: Stainless steel (304, 316), Duplex or other alloys as needed.

Slot width: 0.03″ (~0.76 mm) and finer depending on media size.

Dimensions: May be large diameter / multi‑section construction for large tanks (e.g., 59 ¾″ OD made in 5 sections) for lauter tun screens.

Construction features: welded seams, banding strips, reinforcement rods, custom shaping to fit the tank interior.

Customisation & Engineering Support

We provide custom support grids tailored to your tank or vessel:

Determine the slot size based on media particle size and bed specification.

Match the grid diameter and shape to your tank, including multi‑section or segmented designs.

Choose material grade based on process conditions (corrosion, temperature, abrasion).

Provide drawing and layout support to fit manway access, cleaning removal, or modular replacement.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

Ensure the grid is properly supported on a ledge or beams inside the vessel.

Verify flatness and elevation to avoid pooling or uneven flow.

Allow for access panels or cleaning ports, as solid buildup may reduce efficiency.

Inspect slot integrity and structural frame annually, especially in high‑load or high‑temperature service.

Consider pre‑filtering or backwash procedures to prolong service life of the grid.
