Y strainer (also called a Y type strainer or wye strainer) is a mechanical filtration device installed in pipeline systems to remove solid particles from liquids, gases, or steam.

It is named after its Y-shaped body design, where the filter element is placed at an angle to the main flow line. This structure allows fluid to pass through while trapping debris such as rust, sand, scale, and welding particles inside the mesh screen.

The main purpose of a Y strainer is to protect downstream equipment such as pumps, valves, flow meters, compressors, and heat exchangers from damage caused by contaminants.

Structure of a Y Type Strainer
